Lot Essay

The sitter was the daughter of Thomas Warburton, of Winnington, Chester, and his wife Anne, who was the daughter and co-heir of Sir Robert Williams, Bt., of Penrhyn. In 1717 she married John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll and Duke of Greenwich, becoming his second wife and by him had five daughters.
