Large 18th-century colored woodcut portrait of Jesus Christ on front paste-down. Contemporary blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, brass center and corner pieces and brass catch plates (catches missing). Provenance: Small armorial library stamp on front cover; L.H. Bloest (ownership inscription).
First appearance of this series of woodcuts designed by Tobias Stimmer and cut by his brother Christoph. Conrad Lautenbach's German translation of Josephus first appeared at Frankfurt in 1569, illustrated by woodcuts of Jost Amman.
