JOYCE, James. Pomes Penyeach. [Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press for] Sylvia Beach, 1931. 8° (121 x 92mm). Original printed wrappers, gilt morocco box.
FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, ONE OF 50 COPIES PRINTED TO SECURE AMERICAN COPYRIGHT. Following a letter from Alexander H. Buchman and Edwin A. Johnson requesting permission to print a limited edition of Joyce's Pomes Penyeach (see the following lot), Sylvia Beach swiftly initiated the printing of an edition at the Princeton University Press to secure American copyright, and her edition was published on 2 May 1931, thus pre-empting the Buchman/Johnson edition which probably appeared in the Autumn of that year. According to the records of the Princeton University Press, 50 copies were printed, but Beach herself later remembered the edition as either 30 or 27 copies (cf. inscriptions in two copies held by Yale University Library, inscriptions dated 1931 and 1945 respectively). Slocum and Cahoon Joyce A25.
