Lot Essay
Professor Dr Helmut Börsch-Supan has confirmed the attribution to Schnorr von Carolsfeld, after studying the original, in a letter dated 17 March 2006. The inscription 'nach meinem Ludwig' indicates that the young boy is Schnorr's son Ludwig, who was born in 1836. The study was used in the fresco of The Entry of the Emperor Charles V into Pavia painted for the Kaisersäle in the Residence in Munich. The fresco was destroyed during World War II, but is known through a compositional drawing sold at Karl & Faber, Munich, 31 May-1 June 1995, lot 279. The horse's head on the verso was used on the left side of the same fresco.
