Prince Fedor Petrovich Uvarov was a favourite of Tsar Paul who awarded him in 1799 the order of St. Anne, first class, however he took part in the conspiracy to remove him from the throne in 1801. He was an intimate friend of Alexander I and won the order of St. George at Austerlitz. The present miniature is painted after a large oil portrait by George Dawe, illustrated in Grand Duke Nicholas Mikhaïlovich, Portraits Russes, St Petersburg, 1908, IV, no. 3. Another miniature of the sitter after Jean-Baptiste Isabey was sold Sotheby's, London, 14 December 1985, lot 75.
