While living at the infamous Chelsea Hotel in 1971, Appel completed a series of twenty works entitled The Chelsea People. Each of the 30 x 15 inch paintings in the series depicts people that he encountered while living there. Untitled, 1971 is one work from this series and represents Appels' fascination with the human psyche.
