Lot Essay

Alan Bowness (intro., Kenneth Armitage, exhibition catalogue, Arts Council, Norwich and tour, 1972-73, p. 3) comments that the larger version of this piece (64 in. [162.5 cm.] long), 'shocks in comparision with the first version of this subject, made only a year earlier, it displays an almost destructive violence in its treatment of the female form - the love and affection displayed towards the earlier girls has disappeared'.
