KIPLING, Rudyard. A Fleet in Being, London: Macmillan, 1898, 8vo, FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, title inscribed: "E. H. B[ayly]. from R. K. Dec. '98, Rudyard Kipling," original cloth, dust-jacket (worn).
With an autograph letter signed ("Rudyard Kipling") to Captain Bayly at Princess Hotel, Bermuda, 5 March 1994, with original stamped addressed envelope.
"This is getting serious - not to say annoying. Last summer I was up at Quebec hoping to see you and there I believe I missed the Mohawk by a few days. Last week my wife and I came down here for a holiday and I made sure that I would catch you down here. I heard yesterday from Clarke of the Magicienne that the Mohawk had just been commissioned and that you had gone home on promotion ... We expect to be coming to England for a few weeks in the Spring and since I have been chasing the commander of the Mohawk from South Africa onwards I am resolved to find him at last. Bermuda must be a peculiarly god forsaken hole as a military station but it is amusing to play in for a few weeks and to see the ships again."
With a quantity of related ephemera, including a 1938 Maggs catalogue of Rudyard Kipling first editions and manuscripts. (2)
