Contemporary French mottled calf, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece (front joint splitting, rear joint with small repair at head of spine, corners worn). Provenance: Joseph-Claude Anthelme Récamier (1774-1856), professor of medicine at the Hôtel Dieu in Paris (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION. In 1735 La Condamine was sent to Peru by the Académie des Sciences to measure degrees of meridian at the Equator. This work documents his journey homeward from Peru to the Atlantic coast of South America via the Amazon River. These works mainly deal with the judicial proceeding following the death of Jean Seniergues, a surgeon on La Condamine's expedition, during a riot staged by the people of Cuenca in Peru against those sent by the Académie to measure the meridian.
