Labillardiere was with d"Entrecasteaux on his search for La Perouse. According to Hill, his account of the Tongans is among the best contributions to the ethnology of that people, Cox 69, and is of considerable importance ... Labillardiere gives the first scientific description of the New Zealand flax and brought back several New Zealand plants. This is the first English edition. The original French edition was published in the same year with an accompanying atlas volume. The English edition was issued instead with the plates interleaved in the text. Important views of the area were made by the artist Piron, and the work also includes several important botanical and ornithological images. 56 56 (2)
