Engraved allegorical headpiece by Le Bas after De Sève, engraving by Schmutzer after Fanti extracted from another work and mounted on flyleaf. (Occasional browning and spotting.) Contemporary red morocco gilt, arms of Marie-Théèse de Savoie, comtesse d'Artois [Olivier 2551, fer 3, small version] on sides, citron morocco spine label, gilt edges. Provenance: Marie-Thérèse de Savoie, comtesse d'Artois (1756-1805; binding) -- P. Deschamps -- Edmond (1822-96) and Jules de Goncourt (1830-70; bookplate, flyleaf inscription by Edmond de Goncourt) -- Halsted B. Vander Poel. Olivier describes the book collection of the Countess of Artois, third daughter of Victor Amadeaus III, Count of Savoy and King of Sardinia, and wife of Charles X, as 'une des plus importantes de l'époque'. It was formed by her secretary, Felix Nogaret.
[LA FONTAINE, Jean de (1621-1695)] -- 25 original drawings in black lead on laid or tracing paper, illustrating La Fontaine's Fables. [France: early 19th-century]. 69 x 100mm, each mounted on wove paper to 210 x 296mm). Each drawing with MS caption in French, ?volume and fable number, and letter 'A.' written in pencil on mount, or occasionally on the drawing itself, evidence of drawing on versos. (Mounts lightly spotted.) Modern green half morocco portfolio, green cloth slipcase. Provenance: Halsted B. Vander Poel. La Fontaine's Fables attracted the great draughtsmans of each age, from Chauveau, Oudry, Grandville, and Doré to the modern day. The present charming drawings may also have been made in preparation of a published edition, but neither the artist nor the edition has yet been identified.

Dedié Par un Pere a ses Enfants A la Campagne MDCCLXXI '; and 'Supplement Au Petit-la-Fontaine En Fables D'Auteurs posterieurs et Autres Pieces morales mises en Vers. A la Campagne, 1772'; written in a clear and regular hand, in brown ink, on leaves ruled in pencil, including half-titles, title-pages, lists of contents, a chronology, and an engraved portrait as frontispiece, approximately 260 pages, 4to, numbered I - IX and 1 - 249; contemporary mottled calf (splitting in spine) in 20th-century brown polished calf cover (glued) and slipcase; and: Manuscript (a transcript in an unidentified 18th-century hand) of a religious treatise entitled 'La Consolation des Malheureux', n.p., n.d., written in brown ink in a small regular hand, the title overwritten in black ink, margins ruled in red, 674 pages, small 4to (on leaves numbered 1-337), original brown calf (rubbed, worn in spine). Provenance: Halsted B. Vander Poel. The first manuscript is an apparently unpublished selection of La Fontaine's fables, with a supplement including fables by 40 later authors, the latest by the Abbé [Jean Louis] Aubert dated 1773. The text has been carefully revised for publication, with 18 passages written on slips pasted over the original text. Not in Rochambeau's Bibliographie de La Fontaine (1911).
