Lot Essay

The sitter married Pieter van Heemskerck in 1663. She was the daughter of Dirk Pruys van Oswaert, lawyer to the East India Company in Amsterdam, and Hilgonda Reiniersdr. van Heemskerck. As suggested by Schulz, op.cit., 1972, the present portrait may have formed a pendant with the portrait of Pieter van Heemskerck by Jan van Rossum, for which see next lot. Only three portraits of single sitters by the artist are known. A date of execution in 1648 as suggested by the inscription on the reverse, probably copied when the picture was relined, is confirmed by the style of the painting which shows the influence of Bartholomeus van der Helst's; another female portrait is of the same year (sold at the Delmonte Sale, Christie's Amsterdam, 7 May 1992, lot 124, ill.).
