    A SOUVENIR RECALLING OATES'S SERVICE IN THE 6TH (INNISKILLING) DRAGOON GUARDS, AND HIS POSTING TO EGYPT 1905-08, PRIOR TO INDIA, FROM WHERE HE APPLIED TO JOIN SCOTT'S TERRA NOVA EXPEDITION, AND WAS GRANTED LEAVE BY HIS REGIMENT. HE WAS NICKNAMED 'SOLDIER' ON THE EXPEDITION.
