'Returning to Australia early in 1970, the need to connect with the Australian landscape was strong, and a geologist friend, Ken Glasson, with whom Daws had earlier worked in the field, arranged for him to spend a month on survey work in Western Australia at a remote area some 130 kilometers south of Kalgoorlie on a nickel prospect' (N.Weston, Lawrence Daws, Sydney, 1982, p.95). Daws arrived at Marvel Loch a former gold mining town and upon visiting the pub saw an old framed photograph and cutting regarding an early mining disaster at the mine.
