LEAR, Edward (1812-88). Journals of a Landscape Painter in Southern Calabria, &c. London: R. Bentley, 1852. Large 8°. 2 lithographed maps and 20 tinted plates (some foxing, plates rather less affected, pp.135-39 detached but present). Original blue cloth by Remnant & Edmonds with their ticket, gilt spine, uncut (head of spine slightly defective, spine rather darkened, covers a trifle marked).
FIRST EDITION. Abbey Travel 175 'In this volume ... Lear's technique shows a definite advance. The range of tones is increased while at the same time the texture is lighter and there is greater detail. The size of the lithographs is increased and some of the plates have considerable dramatic force'.
