The cuvette of this watch bears the inscription 'G.V.Bemis To Wm.G.McCarthy a token of Confidence and Esteem, July 1881'; The inside of the caseback is inscribed with the names of five 19th century race horses: Sorrel Dan; Little Brown Jug; Bonesetter; Silvertone; and Fred Douglas.
William G. McCarthy was a well respected horse trainer during the late 19th century. The five names on the inside of the hinged back are all horses that he trained.
It is interesting that this watch has a direct tie into horse racing, as the flying 1/4ths of a second and split second chronograph complications were created originally for the precision timing of such events as horse races.
This watch is also accompanied by a photograph of William G. McCarthy.
