Leopold Trattinnick (1764-1849)
Auswahl vorzglich schner, seltener, berhmter und sonst sehr merkwrdiger Gartenpflanzen in getreuen Abbildungen. Vienna: [1816-]1821[-1822]. 2 volumes, 4 (252 x 174mm). Half-title to vol.I. Engraved line portraits of Sir Joseph Banks and Martin Vahl, 219 engraved plates (218 hand-coloured) by L. Rieder, J. Seher and others, mounted on guards throughout, many plates with nomenclature neatly corrected in ink by a single hand, the same hand providing a 3pp. manuscript index at back of vol.II. (Two plates slightly soiled). Contemporary half morocco (rubbed and scuffed, stitching broken). Provenance: Sigismundi Blik (signature, corrections to plates, manuscript index).
An uncommon work, with a wide range of excellent plates of highly decorative garden plants. Trattinnick was a botanist of private means, based in Vienna, who devoted himself almost exclusively to natural history. A number of works are ascribed to him, this being one of the rarer works. Nissen BBI 1983. (2)
