First edition of the first textbook of the differential calculus. The author acknowledged the contributions of Bernoulli and Leibniz in his preface, which gives a short history of the development of the calculus in the preceeding century. The importance of his work lay in its dissemination throughout Europe of the concepts and early development of the calculus, whose cause L'Hospital advanced through his many contacts. Huygens is reputed to have learned the calculus from L'Hospital. From the library of the celebrated orator and parliamentarian, Honoré-Gabriel Riquetti, count Mirabeau (1749-1791).
