A REPUBLICAN REFUTATION OF THE "SLAVEOCRATIC" PARTY: A GREAT RARITY OF LINCOLN CAMPAIGN LITERATURE

FIRST EDITION. In his Preface, Codding explains that he has attempted to bring together "the principles, facts and authorities, most required in the Republican argument...to refute the Slaveocratic party against which we are contending." Chapter I reprints a biographical sketch of Lincoln from the Chicago Press and Tribune, Chapter II is devoted to "Inalienable Human Rights"; subsequent sections deal with "The Irrepressible Conflict" and such questions as "Does the Constitution...give Congress the Power to Prohibit Slavery...?"; "The Dred Scott Decision"; "The Conspiracy of the Slave Democracy against the Liberties of the Country," etc. Codding was a Congregational minister active in the anti-slavery movement in Illinois. Monaghan 34.

A fragile pamphlet of extreme rarity; only a single copy has been sold at auction since 1975 (the W.H. Lambert copy, 15 April 1984, $3,100).
