[LINCOLN, Abraham]. Partly-printed invitation to a ball, given by Mrs. Lincoln at the White House, 5 February 1862. 53/8 x 25/8 in., accomplished in manuscript. An invitation from President and Mrs. Lincoln to one of the most successful White House affairs of Lincoln's Presidency. The ball was the first of its kind, and some 600-700 notables from Washington society, the government and the military were invited. The invitee, Gen. George Archibald McCall, was one of the oldest West Point graduates to see active service in the Civil War. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Glendale on 30 June 1862, held in Richmond's notorious Libby Prison and later exchanged for Confederate General Simon Bolivar Buckner. The printed invitations to this ball are uncommon.
