[LINCOLN ASSASSINATION CONSPIRATORS]. GARDNER, Alexander, Ihotographer. Nine large plate albumen prints, neatly mounted on 4o contemporary card and captioned. Gardner was chosen by Secret Service head Colonel Baker to photograph the conspirators in custody, awaiting trial. In addition to their power as images, as Mark Katz notes, the photographs are of interest for being "perhaps the earliest known of a criminal lineup." (p.164).
