Lot Essay

"Lee's appropriation of European portraits can be understood as an attempt to locate herself within the western art-historical canon
Her adoption of the copy as a modus operandi was a process of inscribing herself into that tradition... As each individual panel offers a different version of the original, so Lee suggests that identity differs according to time and context. It is a state characterised by moments of flux and uncertainty."
(B Genocchio & M Chui, Lindy Lee Sydney, 2001, p.16)
