Lot Essay

The winner's silks of blue, with a yellow hoop on body and sleeves, with a yellow cap with blue hoop, are those of the Hon. Dorothy Paget. Born in 1905, the daughter of Lord Queenborough and the American heiress, Pauline Whitney, Dorothy Paget had residences at Balfour Place, London and Leeds Castle, Kent. She first registered the colours in 1930 and went on to become an extremely successful although rather eccentric owner. Her most famous wins were with Golden Miller, who won the Cheltenham Gold Cup five times, between 1932-1936 as well as the Grand National in 1934. Another horse, Insurance won the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham in 1932 and 1933.
