Liu Du was a native of Qiantang (modern Hangzhou), and known by his other studio name Shuxian. He studied painting landscapes from Lan Ying and was a very able student. He also took after the style of Li Zhaodao and Li Sixun of the Tang. His architectural paintings, and in particular his miniatures, are meticulously detailed, rivalling the skills of Qiu Ying.
