Lot Essay

Louise Elisabeth de Bourbon (1727-59), daughter of Louis XV and Marie Leczczyñska, was the wife of the Infant Philip, Duke of Parma (1715-1765), son of Philip V of Spain. She is depicted as a younger woman by van Loo in his impressive group portrait of Philip V of Spain with his children and grandchildren of 1743 now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid, Inv. no. 2.283 (see, for example, Museo del Prado, Inventario General de Pinturas, I, 1990, p. 523, no. 1.972, illustrated).
