Post Lot Text
Lucien Freud first experimented with etching in the 1940's under the guidance of Graham Sutherland, who famously gave his etching tools to the young artist. After a brief but creatively fertile period he abandoned the medium, only taking it up again in the 1980's. In 1986 Freud asked his friend and legal adviser, Lord Goodman, to sit for him. Due to the peer's extensive commitments he was only able to pose for Freud in his pyjamas whilst eating his breakfast. Freud rarely hand-colours his etchings but, in this instance, added the pale yellow wash to the pyjamas, drawing attention to the clothing and creating a subtle and humorous foil to Lord Goodman's rugged features.
