LUCIEN DAVIES, R.I. Thomas Richardson 1895, original watercolour by Davis with title dated 1895 (trimmed), 120 x 70mm., window mounted, unframed.
Born at Liverpool in 1860, Lucien Davis was the illustrator for the Badminton Library edition of cricket. The subject of this watercolour, Thomas Richardson, was one of the greatest fast bowlers of his or, indeed, any generation. Neville Cardus described his action as 'like a great wave of the sea about to break', he played fourteen times for England taking 88 wickets at an average of 25.22. His 290 wickets in the 1890 championship season were a record for the time and stood for the next thirty-three years. His first class record of wickets taken stands at 2,105 at an average of 18.42.
