Lot Essay

Peter Schatborn kindly confirmed the attribution to Bakhuizen, in a communication dated 14 March 2004. Mr. Schatborn dates the drawing to around 1679 by comparison with a signed and dated coastal scene in the Noro Foundation (H. Verbeek, Travels through Town and Country, Haarlem, 2000, no. 64) and adds that this type of finished drawing was probably intended for sale.
We are grateful to Peter Schatborn for his help in cataloguing this lot.
