This and the following lot are preparatory studies for two of a series of seven etchings by Sabatelli illustrating the Revelation of Saint John printed in Milan in 1809-10 (B. Paolozzi Strozzi, Luigi Sabatelli, Disegni e incisioni, exhib. cat., Florence, Uffizi, 1978, nos. 62-68). The compositions were partly inspired by Dürer's set of woodcuts of the subject and partly by Tommaso Puccini, a collector and print connoisseur who lived in Florence.
A preparatory drawing for the present composition is in the Gabinetto dei Disegni del Castello Sforzesco, Milan (B 2209).
