Lot Essay

The small scale adopted is rare in Pepijn's oeuvre. It may be that the work was intended for a private devotional purpose. The unusual presence of Saint Martha may be explained by the fact that Pepijn's daughter was named after the saint. Her godmother was Isabella Brant, wife of Sir Peter Paul Rubens.
