Engraved
In reverse by an anonymous engraver as the last of a series of six plates for The Story of Susanna, 1563 (Holl. 224).

Lot Essay

This is a study for the sixth and last plate of the The Story of Susanna published in 1563. It was published first by Hieronymus Cock and secondly by Carel Collaert. The engraving bears the inscription 'SUSANNA VNA CVM MARITO CAETERISQ[VE] COGNATIS DEUM LAVDANT'
Heemskerck's drawing for plate 5 of the series was sold at Christie's London, 6 July 1999, lot 217. That for plate 3 was in the Chatsworth sale at Christie's London, 3 July 1984, lot 51 and that for plate 2 remains at Chatsworth. Heemskerck had previously depicted The Story of Susanna in a series of four prints, upright in format, dated 1551.
