8° (129 x 89mm). Half-tone portrait frontispiece signed by Mao Tse-Tung. Original flexible red plastic over paper binding, titled in black and blind-stamped with a star on the upper cover (lightly marked and discolored). Provenance: Jan McLeod, New Zealand (ownership inscription).

'THE LITTLE RED BOOK', SIGNED BY CHAIRMAN MAO. The recipient, Jan McLeod, was a ballet student in China from 1964. The inscription was made when she accompanied her father, the editor of the New Zealand left-wing weekly People's Voice to an interview with Mao on 2 July 1967 in the Great Hall of the People, Beijing. The lot is accompanied by photographs of Mao inscribing the book, seated next to the recipient, and of the two shaking hands, together with reproductions of two other images of the event. No signed copy of 'The Little Red Book' can be traced at auction in published records.
