Husain has done a series of paintings on the theme of Kama Sutra referred to as his "Erotic" series, dating primarily to the late 1960's and 70's. More recently, Husain revisited the theme with a suite of watercolors exhibited in Paris. In these paintings, he gives figurative expression to passion in all of its permutation. Husain's concern is with the secret world that constitutes the relationships between man and woman. The use of certain symbols such as elephants, deer, or horses, is prevalent as these were common motifs in ancient Indian manuals of erotica. Husain's twisting torsi the dynamism and movement of Khajuraho sculptures as well as the optical illusions found in tantric miniatures.
