Scenes of rural Indian life have also been a mainstay in Husain's oeuvre. In this later painting, Husain re-interprets a work from 1947, see R. Bartholomew and S. Kapur, Husain, New York, 1972, cat. no. 17. Though stylistically different, both paintings have compositional similarities as seen in the posture of the potter, the laden donkey at left, and the depiction of the houses amongst the hills in the background.
