MARIETTE, Jean (1660-1742, publisher). L'Architecture à la mode ou sont les nouveaux dessins pour la décoration des bâtimens et jardins. [Paris: Jean Mariette, ca. 1720].
3 volumes, small 2° (325 x 210mm). Engraved throughout. Three volume titles (each with pasted-on strips obscuring the 'Langlois' imprint, vol.III with a section of the title text obscured as well), 521 engraved plates (including a number of section titles, 187 plates double-page). (Two plates in vol.I and two in vol.II shaved, one plate in vol.III detached). Late-18th century blue morocco-backed marbled boards (head of spine of vol.III detached). Provenance: John, 2nd Marquess of Bute (1793-1848, Luton Library armorial bookplate).
A VERY FINE COLLECTION of plates illustrating many aspects of architectural ornamentation (vol.I), garden design and decoration (vol.II) and interior decoration (vol.III), probably assembled and bound according to the original client's wishes. Jean and Pierre-Jean Mariette appear to have taken over the publishing rights of many of Nicolas Langlois's plates; the present collection includes a mixture of imprints including the makeshift general titles with pasted-on slips and volume numbers added in manuscript to the first two volumes. The Berlin Katalog lists two similar Sammelbände under Langlois (numbers 358 & 359), one with 34 separate works on 280 plates and a second with 54 works on 362 plates. The present copy with 521 plates includes works by Le Pautre; Loire; Cottart; Mansard; Le Bouteaux; Le Pautre; Le Blond; Boulle on doorways, chimney-pieces, wall-panels, ceilings, garden designs, fountains, curtains and hangings, cabinets, side-tables, cartouches, vases, carriages, carved borders and frames. The collection appears to consist of about 68 sections, but the absence of title pages makes identification of complete works problematic; however, as an example, the following are complete: Sr.MASSON. Nouveaux Desseins pour graver sur l'orfeverie. Paris: J.Mariette, [n.d.]. Title and 5 plates. Berlin Kat. 1055; Hugues BRISVILLE. Diverses pieces de Serruriers... engravez par Jean Berain. Paris: [n.d.]. Title, dedication and 14 plates. Berlin Kat. 1338. Cf. Berlin Kat. 358 & 359; sold as a collection of plates not subject to return. (3)
