Portrayed on this lithograph are the hands of the artist. George Escher, son of M.C., regarded this print as the best selfportrait his father ever made.
Only 43 copies of this print were sold. The stone was erased. In 1959 Escher mentioned two last sheets: one being in his own possession, the other one with the publisher of M.C. Escher. Grafiek en Tekeningen. The latter print was on loan for reproduction purposes and damaged during the loan. The artist demanded a compensation of 400 guilders.
