In 1924 the critic A.E. Gallatin noted: "To write of Kuehne's work without mentioning his ability as a wood carver would be like writing about Michelangelo's genius without referring to his mural painting..." Like his friend Charles Prendergast, Kuehne became an accomplished craftsman who designed and executed picture frames, framed panels and furniture, often drawing upon Persian miniatures and Japanese screens as a source of inspiration. A one-man show of Kuehne's cabinet pieces and folding screens was held in 1932 at the Arden Gallery in New York, demonstrating the popularity of his decorative art designs.
