Lot Essay

One of a small group of studies of shepherds and rural scenes drawn en plein air by Liebermann from the Spring to the end of August 1888, while staying at Bad Kösen in the Thuringian Forest. Another study from this period, entitled Allee in Kukulau bei Kösen, dated 1888 and in the same technique, was illustrated in H. Wolff, op. cit., pl. 41, while a third, probably not drawn from nature, is in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, Für Max Liebermann, exhib. cat., Berlin, 1985, no. 213. This sequence of studies led to a canvas of A shepherd with his flock among trees in a New York private collection, M. Eberle, op. cit, p. 328, no. 1888/2.
