MCMURTRY, Larry (b. 1936). Horseman, Pass By. New York: Harper, 1961.
8o. Original cloth-backed boards; pictorial dust jacket (a few skilful repairs to extremities on verso, spine panel slightly faded).
FIRST EDITION OF THE AUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by McMurtry on the front free endpaper: "To Mr. Zimmerman, who is certainly diligent. Larry McMurtry." Basis for the outstanding 1963 film Hud, starring Paul Newman, Patricia Neal, and Melvyn Douglas. Neal and Douglas won Academy Awards for their roles, but Newman did not win for Best Actor. Apparently an early presentation, with McMurtry's handwriting very legible (unlike his later inscriptions).
