(my) MERCURY CONCEPT
Silver with sage interior
(my) Mercury was created to assess the attractiveness and functionality of a crossover multi-activity concept with its emphasis on sport. Designed to be built on the multi-purpose Contour/Mystique platform, (my) Mercury is a serious effort to integrate as many functional elements as possible into a package that is conveniently sized.
Using Ford's experience with double door extended cab pickup design, (my) Mercury has conventionally-hinged front doors and short back doors hinged at the rear. The rear doors can only be opened when the front doors are unlatched and there is no center post. Interior access when both doors on a side are opened is exceptional, both for passengers and for loading "adventure gear", making this feature particularly useful for multi-activity vehicles. (my) Mercury takes cargo capacity even further, however. The roof is extended to a rear hatch. The upper portion is hinged at the top where the extension meets the roofline and opens complete with the rear quarter windows while the lower swings down to extend the cargo area floor for longer loads. In (my) Mercury the rear seats also fold down, giving 6 feet of unobstructed load space with the hatch closed.
The exterior design of (my) Mercury is timely and is highlighted by an arched roof that extends smoothly from the windshield pillar to the rear deck. (my) Mercury expresses a sharp-edged "machined from billet" style that includes brushed aluminum details on the roof arches. Wheel wells have clearly defined flares which complement the six-spoke wheels and P235/55VR-18 tires. The windows, including two panels in the roof, are tinted amber to protect occupants from the sun while creating an airy and open feeling.
Although a functional concept of (my) Mercury was constructed, (my) Mercury offered here is a platform styling model constructed in fiberglass. It is finished in the silver with sage interior livery of the functional example. The dummy interior extends only to the base of the dashboard. The doors and hatch are non-functional and the wheels are plastic. The exterior paint, particularly on the roof extension and deck lid, is flawed. It does however come equipped with state of the art Bembo brake calipers!
An example of the many steps that creation of a new concept can take, (my) Mercury is a stylish and modern creation that promises further alternatives in life style vehicles.
