This is the only known Swedish copy of an original poster for Metropolis to have appeared at auction. First released in Germany in 1927, Metropolis is considered to be director Fritz Lang's masterpiece. The story of the deranged scientist, Rotwang, who creates a robot woman called Maria, was first conceived by Lang's wife, Thea von Harbous in 1924. Lang's vision of a futuristic city in the year 2000 was based on a visit he made to New York in 1924. Very few original release posters for this title have appeared at auction.
