THE PROPERTY OF A PRIVATE COLLECTOR
[MEXICO--Inquisition.] Nos los Inquisidores Apostolicos contra la Heretica Pravedad, y Apostasía en esta Ciudad, y Arzobispado de Mexico... A Short Abridgment fo [sic] Christian Doctrine. Mexico City, 1787.
Small 8o (146 x 100 mm). 41 pp. (Tiny wormhole catching a few letters.) Modern blue calf.
FIRST EDITION, OF UTMOST RARITY: ACCORDING TO MEDINA, THIS IS THE ONLY BOOK PRINTED IN ENGLISH IN THE WHOLE OF SPANISH AMERICA DURING THE 300 YEARS OF COLONIAL RULE. The first two pages are in Spanish and the remaining are in English, being "A Short Abridgement fo [sic] Christian Doctrine." Due to the large number of English and Irish immigrants living in Mexico in the second half of the 18th-century, it is likely this book was printed for this burgeoning population. The work is very scarce, with only 6 copies, including the present, recorded: the RLG Eureka catalogue lists only the copies at Harvard, NYPL, Yale and the John Carter Brown Library; another is known to have been sold privately to the British Library. No copies are recorded in American Book Prices Current in at least 30 years. ESTC W41449 (no locations in Great Britain); Medina Mexico 7705.
