Lot Essay

The present picture is comparable to the Personification of Fortitude sold at Sotheby's, London, 11 December 1996, lot 34 (£54,300). Both belong to a group of female heads painted by the artist when he was much influenced by Giorgio Vasari. Other pictures in this group are the Lucrezia and Leda in the Galleria Borghese, Rome (inv. nos. 322 and 323; P. della Pergola, Galleria Borghese, Rome, 1959, II, nos. 53-54, pls. 54) and a Judith sold in these Rooms, 27 April 1928, lot 41.
