During the Napoleonic Wars, with frequent fears of French invasion, Volunteer units were raised throughout the country. Sir James Grant, who held extensive estates around Strathspey, raised a regiment of Fencibles almost exclusively from his own tenantry in 1793. Known as the Grant Fencibles they were disbanded in 1799 when the threat of invasion receded. In 1798 he raised the Strathspey Battalion of Volunteers or Armed Association which first met at Grantown in July of that year. In Abernethy there were 2 Companies, the Eastern & the Western;the Western Company had a strength of 80 & their captain was James Grant of Birchfield, the recipient of this snuff box.
