Important unpublished autograph manuscript on the recently invented parachute, illustrated with a schematic pen-and-ink sketch. The Montgolfier brothers, sons of an important paper manufacturer, invented the hot-air ballon in 1782-83, and the first human flight was accomplished on 20 November 1783 in one of these "Montgolfières". Joseph Montgolfier may have witnessed Le Normand's parachute trials at Montpellier. He made a parachute of his own design and in March 1784 dropped a sheep from a tower in Avignon. The first human jump was not made until 1797, long after the brothers had withdrawn from aeronautics and returned to papermaking.
