NATTES, John Claude. Versailles, Paris, et Saint Denis; ou une suite de vuës... avec une description historique. London: W.Savage for W.Miller, J.C.Nattes and M.Vendremeni, [plates dated 1805-1810, but watermarked 1801-1813].
2° (482 x 335mm). Letterpress title, 'List of plates' in English and French, 79pp. text. 40 hand-coloured aquatints by I.Hill after Nattes. (Numerous neat repairs to text without loss, some platemarks neatly repaired, light dampstain to lower blank margin of first plate.) Modern blue half morocco gilt, t.e.g., by Zaehnsdorf.
A FINE AND RARE SERIES. Many of the Parisian views show the influence of Piranesi in the choice of angles, also (and the singular topography of Paris may have necessitated this) Nattes seems to have been obsessed by bridges; 8 of the views are of bridges and a further 7 are scenes drawn from beneath them. The result is a series including a number of highly dramatic views, a cut above the average topographical scenes of the period. Tooley 342; cf. Abbey Travel 103 (English title and text).
