NELSON, Horatio, Viscount (1758-1805). Autograph letter signed ('Horatio Nelson', written with his right hand) to George 'Naylor' [Nayler], 'Theseus off Cadiz', 29 June 1797, one page, 4to, integral blank leaf, on light blue paper (remains of guard on verso of 2nd leaf).
A reply, to be delivered by his brother, to a letter concerning his pedigree and installation as Knight of the Bath, commenting that 'Government have always I believe on occasions like the present paid all the fees of office [official] installation, & I expect they will do it on the present occasion, for I cannot think of being at one sixpence expence'.
Written three weeks before the loss of his arm in the action at Santa Cruz. Sir George Nayler was York Herald from 1794 and later Garter King of Arms. Nelson was awarded a knighthood in recognition of his part in the Battle of Cape St Vincent the previous February.
