[NEVE, Richard (fl. 1702-1716?)]. The City and Countrey Purchaser's, and Builder's Dictionary... by T.N. Philomath, London: J. Sprint, 1703. 8° (190 x 111mm). (A few marginal repairs, touching text on last leaf, some light marginal soiling.) Contemporary panelled calf (spine replaced, corners worn, slight chipping to back board).
FIRST EDITION, with the variant title leaf. There are at least two issues of the first edition, which are thought to have been simultaneous. However, RIBA notes that the Bodleian copy with the variant title leaf is later. 'An entirely new type of architectural book... in which diversified material is brought together from many different sources and arranged alphabetically under catchwords' (Harris p.331). It was clearly influenced by John Harris's Lexicon Technicum, the first comprehensive general encyclopaedia, though it preceeds the publication of that book by one year. Harris 595; RIBA 2261.
