Lot Essay

Krempel lists six other paintings which are dated 1664 (L.Krempel, op.cit., p.294/5, no.A60-A65). All these, including the present picture, are characterised by a monumental scale, showing Flemish tendencies, inspired by van Dyck.
This monumentality would persist throughout the 1660's; in the 1670's Maes introduced a new cabinet size scale to portraiture.
