The drawings illustrate Louis-Antoine de Bougainville's trips around the world. Bougainville (1729-1811) turned to shipping from military in 1763 and was the first Frenchman circumvulating around the world. He departed from Saint Malo and went on to Montevideo through the Falklands. Afterward he went to the Pacific ocean, stopping in numerous small islands. Later he visited New Guinea and came back to Saint Malo in 1769, three years after his departure. He published in 1771 a book on his trip, Voyage autour du monde.
